Genocide- French

We did a project about genocides and had to write a 3 minute presentation. We made slides and included pictures while talking for 3 minutes in French. My partner and I presented about the Holocaust and the effects of it. I really enjoyed doing this project because it let us learn about important events as well as learn about French and how to speak it. I also liked doing  this project because it allowed me to grow my confidence in speaking French as well and help me learn more about important events. I also learned about how to form french sentences and how to set them up so the grammar makes sense. Overall, this project helped me develop great french grammar and writing skills, it helped me become more comfortable speaking and writing french, and it helped me learn a lot more vocabulary and how to discuss events in french.

Eportfolio Entry

In class we completed a lab regarding the properties of ionic and covalent bonds. We mixed five substances that looked relatively similar with water to test its solubility in water. We also tried to determine the melting point of the substances. The last test we put our substances through was testing its conductivity. This was important because it helped us distinguish the differences between ionic and covalent bonds, which we knew as salt and other substances. This is important to Chemistry because it describes the difference between ionic and covalent bonds and the characteristics of the two.

I was very interested in this because it is intriguing that all of these substances that look very similar can be very different. I also think it is interesting because these types of bonds are seen in my everyday life and are very important to chemistry. Covalent bonding is a form of chemical bonding between two non metallic atoms which is characterized by the sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms and other covalent bonds. An ionic bond is a chemical bond formed between two ions with opposite charges. Ionic bonds form when one atom gives up one or more electrons to another atom. They are different because a covalent bond occurs between two non-metals and an ionic bond occurs between one non-metal and one metal. This can be applied to new scenarios because we can do a similar lab but use different substances to determine the kinds of bonds. Covalent and Ionic bonds have different characteristics and we can use the ones that we test to establish the difference within a group of solutions.

This is connects to what I previously knew because we were learning about ionic and covalent bonds but I was never able to visualize the differences between them and see how they are used in science as well as our everyday life in food and other substances. At first, we made the foil tray too small. This made it hard to label and keep the substances separated and organized. These types of bonds are seen in everyones everyday life and are very important to the world and chemistry. They are seen in all the food we eat and produce. I think while doing this lab I learned a lot more about the processes of doing labs and all the preparation that goes into it to make the lab easier to understand and more organized. I also connected the material we learned in class to material that we learned during this lab that also connects to the outside world.

Investment Final Project Paper

Project Paper

This project was about investing money and seeing how it grows until it is time to retire. I learned a lot about how important investing money was. I also learned about the importance of the Ethical Decision Maker Mount Vernon Mindset and how we should donate some of our money to people in need. Life partners with Sarah Schab and we decided to stay together after we retired. Together, we made around $74 million dollars.

My low risk fund made 191,282.48.

My medium risk made $2,319,395.8.

My high risk made $36,034,189.74.

The major steps of this project were finding our low, medium, and high risk funds. We invested $3,000 in low risk, $4000 in medium risk, and $3000 in high risk. Then, we used an equation to predict how much we will make until we retire at the age of 60. Another main part of the project was determining how much money we made after market crashes. During the 20th year, our high risk lost $10,000, our medium risk lost $5,000, and our low risk lost $3,000. During the 40th year, our high risk lost $50,000, our medium risk lost $20,000, and our low risk lost $10,000. When the market crashed I thought I would lose more money than I actually did. It was really interesting to see how the crashes impacted the funds I invested in and see how much money I could lose.

This project taught me a lot about money and the importance of investing. I did not know much about it or how important it actually was until now. Investing can be a great way to earn money to retire.

I wish that I had invested more money because there wasn’t a chance we were going to lose all of our money. If this was the real world I probably would have invested it in higher rated funds because then I know that there is a better chance I won’t lose all of my money if there was to be a market crash. I would have also invested in more low risk funds because there is a smaller chance to lose money and a smaller amount of money you may lose. I think that this helped me realize how important it is that you find the right funds because there is a better chance you won’t lose all of your money.

I worked really hard in all aspects of this project, but I think the part that required the most work was the hands-on math portion. This was good work because I really tried to get the numbers part right. I worked the hardest on this part because it required a lot more learning of information that I did not previously know.

I think the most enjoyable part was picking out everything that we were buying. We decided to move to Iowa and move into a house that costs $2,799,000. The mortgage is about $10,000 a month. We are going to spend around $2,012 a month on groceries, heating, gas, electricity, cable, and water. We are also going to spend around $55,000 on a pool. Sarah and I are both going to be purchasing new cars. I will get a Porsche 911 which costs around $10,000 a month and Sarah is getting a VW Beetle which costs $200 a month. Picking out everything that we were going to spend our money on was really fun, but it also showed me how to spend my money wisely so I will still have enough to pay for groceries and other necessities.

The least enjoyable part of this project was the calculations at first because it was really hard to understand. After I started to understand it, it because easier and actually fun to see how much money I was actually making. To make this project better I would probably put everything on one document just to make it more organized.

Overall, I really enjoyed doing this project because it allowed me to learn about investing money and the future. I think that it was very helpful to learn about the importance of investing and saving money. I also think that showing crashes in the market also was helpful because it shows the importance of being smart with your money.

Investments Donations

I am going to donate $10,000. I think that it is very ethical to donate money to people in need because I am more fortunate and should help people with less resources. I think it is very important to Christianity to donate money because you want to be seen as a giver and as someone that helps others in need instead of being selfish and greedy. I want to donate the $10,000 to different charities so I can make an impact in multiple causes. Some charities that I think are important to donate to are St. Jude, Ronald McDonald, African Wildlife Foundation, and the Conservation Fund. I want to split the money up equally to all these charities, and later on, continue to donate more.

Investments Ethical Decision Mindset

The MV Ethical Decision Maker Mindset states that people have to exhibit integrity, honesty, empathy, fairness, and respect. They also have to demonstrate a lot of responsibility. I think that this mindset is very important when you choosing investments because you have to be responsible about picking the ones that you want and you have to be knowledgeable about how you are spending your money.  I have spread out my $10,000 pretty evenly. I have chosen to invest $3,000 in a high risk fund called Morgan Stanley Multi Cap Growth Trust. I invested $4,000 in a medium risk fund called Value Line Mid Cap Focused Fund. Finally, I invested $3,000 in a low risk fund called Lord Abbett National Tax Free Fund Class A.

Investments Project Retirement Plan

Retirement Plan

$1 in 2019 will be closely equal to $3 in 2058. This is because the inflation is about 2.50% and the cumulative inflation is 161.96%. This means the 2019 dollar will not go as far as the 2058 dollar.

We are going to stay together and buy a nice home in the Hamptons to retire at. The home costs $5,995,000. We have $74,736,909.17 combined before we donated $10,000 to charity.

We have about the same amount as I predicted we would have. We didn’t lose as much money as I expected which is good so we have enough to spend once we retire. We are pretty close to what we had projected.

I think it is financially possible for us to retire, but we decided to stay together and combine our money. We are choosing to retire together so our money is combined and we have a lot more.

Investment Types

We started a project in math and we were tasked to define and understand 3 types of funds.

  • High-risk funds
    • High-risk funds are funds which carry a high level of risk but generate impressive returns. These funds require active management and their performance must be reviewed regularly as these are prone to market volatility.
  • Medium-risk funds
    • The level of risk associated with medium-risk funds is neither too high, nor too low. The corpus of medium-risk funds is invested partly in debt and partly in equities. The average returns offered by these funds range from 9% to 14%.
  • Low-risk funds
    • The corpus of low-risk funds is spread across a combination of arbitrage funds, ultra-short-term funds, and liquid funds. These funds are ideal in times of unexpected national crisis or when the rupee depreciates in value.

We also had to define these terms:

  • Investment portfolio
    • A portfolio is a collection of investments held by an investment company, hedge fund, financial institution or individual.
  • Mutual funds
    • an investment program funded by shareholders that trades in diversified holdings and is professionally managed.
  • Mutual fund ratings
    • A mutual fund rating is usually a measure of a fund’s historical risk-adjusted performance over different time frames compared with the funds in the same category.

The Card Game Reflection

Based on what I heard in the documentary, I think that it was very unethical that Providian was taking money from its customers. I think the tactics used by Providian were very unethical and were used to scam people. They raised peoples rates for little reason and caused thousands in debt. The former CEO stated that, “We were making a billion dollars a year in profit,” and they were still charging their customers an absurd amount of money and tacking on additional fees for every purchase.

I think it is very unfair how they raised a man’s rates because he had some medical bills from having cancer. As a company, I think it is important to value your customers, when you are already making so much money. They were scamming their customers and creating more debt for themselves, by causing more debt for their customers. Through the lense of the MVPS Mindset, specifically Ethical Decision Making, the Providian company was very unethical.

60 Minutes French Interview

60 Minute Interview

Image result for 60 minutes

For our end of Module Project we were given the task to film a 60 Minutes type interview. I interviewed my mom for this project and asked her two main types of questions. One was how the evolution between individuals. I asked about when she was growing up how technology progressed and how technology affects her job. The second topic we discussed was the access to information. We discussed how that has changed over the years and how it can make her job easier. I really enjoyed this project because it was different from projects we have done in the past. I liked that we were able to pick topics that we were interested in and could edit it and make it our own. This made me more comfortable with translating and writing in french because we had to write subtitles in french to go along with our video.

Government French Speech

Oral Presentation

Image result for freedom of speech

In this module we did an oral presentation about a law of current events. I wrote my oral presentation about the freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is the right you have to express your opinion and your religion. You have the opportunity to stand up for what you believe in and make your voice heard. I really liked this oral presentation because it was very interesting to learn about and research. I also like learning about what my classmates were passionate about. This project allowed me to learn new words that I have never seen before and learn how to use them in context. I think that when we do oral presentations the class gets more comfortable speaking in front of each other and better at pronunciation.

Politics Mod 2

For the exhibition Katie and I designed a survey that takes people experiences of 9/11 and their opinions on politics about how they changed. We used the exhibition to get people’s responses for our survey. I think we were successful because we got more responses than we initially thought we would, and people really expressed their opinions in the survey which was unexpected. We got a lot of good information that we didn’t have and could also build on the information that we did have. I have really enjoyed Mod 2 because we get to work on a project we are passionate about and not have too much strict guidance about how the project should continue. I wish that we could have had a few checkpoints that we could have followed to make sure we were on the right path with our projects progression. Overall, this mod has been a great experience because we had to be more independent in class and guide our way through the project mostly on our own. I have really enjoyed designing a project that I am passionate about.
